“Renowned for his powerful, unsettling figurative paintings that confront issues of morality, mortality, and social injustice, Ken Currie rose to prominence in the 1980s with the group of painters known as The New Glasgow Boys. Painting in a Neo-Expressionist style, one of Currie’s early career highlights was the series of history paintings created for the People’s Palace in Glasgow commemorating the 200th anniversary of the massacre of the Calton Weavers.”

L’ÂGE D’OR - 215x305cm - Oil on canvas

“The 1990s saw Currie’s focus shift to confront ideas of morality and corruption in response to the humanitarian crisis in Eastern Europe. The emaciated, skeletal figures of The Troubled City (1991) are a powerful comment on the suffering caused by war. In the 21st century, Currie has largely focused on mysterious rites, rituals, and quasi-medical practices painted in the rich luminous style evident in Large Effigy (2012), although he continues to offer biting commentary on social inequality in works such as L’Age D’Or (2011).”
